MG Siegler, writing for TechCrunch, all but confirms a gold-colored iPhone 5S for this year:
Yes, there will be a gold iPhone.
That’s the latest I’m hearing from multiple sources after several weeks of rumors and possible component leaks suggesting the same thing. At first, I couldn’t believe Apple would break from the tradition of offering the simple choice: black and white (or “slate” and “silver” if you prefer for the iPhone 5) for their flagship device. Gold simply seemed too gaudy, perhaps even tacky. But a few compelling arguments countered my disbelief. And now, upon checking, sure enough, there will be gold.
Kudos to Siegler for tying the Goldfinger reference to (a) the gold iPhone; and (b) the rumored marquee feature of the 5S, a fingerprint sensor. Well done.
After using a white iPhone 4S for almost two years and being horrified at reports of the black iPhone scratching so easily, I’m 99.9 percent certain that I’ll get a white 5S. No interest in the gold myself, but Rene Ritchie’s mockup looks pretty nice. I'd like to see a Product Red iPhone, as I’m a fan of the red iPod Touch. A red iPhone with a black face and black inlays would look very sleek.
