'The Imaginary Baseball Gene'

“Lindsay”, in a thoughtful piece on sexism, women, and baseball:

What does my gender have anything to do with my knowledge and love of baseball? I will forever be baffled by this. You cannot give me a valid reason or explanation as to why my gender plays any role in what I have to say.

Also, I’m not trying to impress you. I’m not flirting with you. If I want to talk baseball with you, it’s because I want to talk about baseball. Don’t be surprised when I can talk statistics with you. Don’t think that I’m doing it to win you over. It’s about baseball. Respect the game and respect me, and we’ll get along just fine.

Hear, hear.

It’s sad that this is 2013, yet gender stereotyping is still alive and well. (Cf. the Gina Trapani thing) In fact, were I to survey everyone, I’d bet a majority of my family and friends who like baseball (or sports in general) would be about 50/50 male to female. I see a lot of Instagram photos taken at ballparks from female friends. And being that baseball is my first love, I always enjoy talking about it with anyone, regardless of gender.
