Osama Orgy

Wow -- two posts in one day. This hasn't happened for a while. I felt compelled to write again tonight in the wake of President Obama's announcement that Osama bin Laden was killed. I didn't watch the press conference, but caught snippets of Obama's comments via MoJo's Twitter feed. I'm not sure how I feel about the news, other than to say I was surprised by it. From every newscast I've watched to every tweet I've read so far, there seems to be this "USA! USA!" pride-type vibe going on. Of course, Obama echoed much of these sentiments in his speech. Stuff like:

The American people did not choose this fight. It came to our shores. We know the costs of war, yet we will be relentless.

and...

Justice has been done.

and...

Let us remember that we can do these things not just because of wealth and power, but because of who we are.

Call me a cynic and unpatriotic (because it's true) but I'm not feeling all choked up and proud to be an American right now. I never was; bin Laden's death won't change that. I've never believed in this so-called "War on Terror" because, frankly, I can understand why some other countries want to kick our ass. The truth is, we're an arrogant bunch. We think we're the greatest because we've got "democracy" and "freedom" and all that shit. Our infatuation with these ideals is borderline romantic. There's reasons Europeans refer to us as "stupid Americans" and it isn't because they're unconsciously jealous of how "great" we are.

Obviously, Obama can't say all that. Hell, I know he doesn't feel the way I do. Not many people do. All I'm trying to say is I'm pretty apathetic about Osama's death. I think it's such a "historic" day (evening?) because US forces killed him Jack Bauer-style. If he died in his cave of natural causes, I don't think there'd be such reverie. It's the fact some soldier put a bullet in his ass that reassures America's, like, the best. But yeah, Osama's dead. Splendid. Too bad he probably had a line of succession. And those guys are pissed.

On the brighter side of tonight's event, some of the comments I read on Twitter have been fantastic. They're one of my inspirations for posting a second time:

...[Ohio State head football coach] Jim Tressel knew Osama was dead for a week but didn't know who to tell...

and...

I wonder if Osama will keep releasing tapes. You know, like Tupac.

and perhaps the most poignant one...

...I was pretty sure Democrats thought justice for terrorists included jury trials with lawyers and whatnot?

I mean it: Democrats and Republicans basically feed from the same trough! And somewhere in Texas, Dubya is shitting himself, crying that he wasn't in office when Osama's ass became grass.

Don't worry, George. You and Barack have more in common than people think.
