In a capitalist nation such as ours, money is the only metric that’s worth shit.1
Android, er, fanboys like to point to the fact that, aside from being “OPEN!”, it holds the lion’s share of the mobile OS market. While there’s no doubt that’s true, the problem with always crowing about market share to propel the “Android is winning” mantra is market share tells only one side of the story. And it’s not even the important one. Money makes the world go ‘round, and iOS is kicking ass where things matter most. Developers choose iOS (partly) because it makes money. People can spin things however they want in order to favor their argument, but nobody can deny the fact that our free market, capitalist economy is all about the Benjamins. And Apple’s got $81B C-Notes, due in large part to the success of their IOS devices and the App Store. In other words, Apple’s said “fuck you” to market share to go after what’s really important. And they’ve become wildly successful and obscenely rich because of it.
Then again, everything I’ve just written could just be bullshit because, as Marco notes:
Developers target iOS first, and often exclusively, because we’re fanboys.
Yeah, right. Developers target iOS because it’s all about the Benjamins, baby.
That isn’t to say that making a buck should be the only thing that matters -- it isn’t. My point is just making money and lots of it is the most important thing to our economic principle. ↩
