Google Acquires Sparrow

My heart sank this morning when I read this part of Sparrow’s email announcing the move:

We will continue to make available our existing products, and we will provide support and critical updates to our users. However, as we’ll be busy with new projects at Google, we do not plan to release new features for the Sparrow apps.

Sigh.

What this means is Sparrow is effectively dead. It’s too bad, because I liked it a lot. Obviously I could still use the apps on my Macs and iPhone, but I don’t want to use a product that the developer isn’t going to actively support/improve. I’ve deleted Sparrow from my iPhone and my Macs, and will go back to using Mail.app.1

You can read Sparrow CEO’s Dom Leca’s announcement on their website.

  1. Apple’s Mail client is way too power user-y for my spartan needs, particularly on the Mac. Sparrow was great because not only was it robust, it also felt lightweight and minimal.  ↩
