MLB.com reports that Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera has been suspended 50 games for a failed drug test:
The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera has received a 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
The suspension of Cabrera is effective immediately.
There aren’t enough underscores to emphasize what a huge blow this is to the Giants. He was arguably the team’s best hitter, ranking second in the league in batting average (.345), and first in hits (159) and runs scored (84). Unless they acquire a big bat via trade, I have serious doubts about this team beating the Dodgers in the NL West. The team’s beat writer, Andrew Baggarly, tweeted that Cabrera would be eligible to play in the postseason -- that’s great, but the problem now is getting there without him. I'm not sure they can.
